Discard your "should" and discover your why

Nothing like kettlebell work in the middle of the desert.

Nothing like kettlebell work in the middle of the desert.

It's been more than a month since my first blog post about GameStop and fitness. Instead of dwelling on the guilt of how much time has passed, I celebrate that I'm back writing another post!

A lot of people feel guilt when it comes to working out or training. There's this notion of "should": how often we should train, how much we should lift, how hard we should push ourselves. "Should" taps into obligation or duty. It can be noble but it's not very fun, and it often feels like we're falling short of something.

Instead, we can reflect on our goals for why we train in the first place. "Start with why" as Simon Sinek so famously advised. For me, I train because it gives me agency, builds my physical and mental strength, and I'm motivated to show my clients and other athletes that fitness is a lifelong journey. When I remember these goals, it's not "I should train," but instead "I get to train today!" or "I'm excited to train today." Training is an opportunity to live my why.

So don't beat yourself up for missing some time or easing up on workouts for a bit. Life happens. The past year has shown us, boy, does it happen. The hardest part of training is showing up. Once you show up, whether your lift is on point or a little off, it's a good lift in my book. You showed up, you're working, you're training, and that is a win. Shift your perspective, and you'd be surprised how much progress you can make when you're enjoying your workouts.

Discard your "should" and discover your why. Then show up and train with me, and let's get after it!

See you out there,

Andrew
