Ch-ch-ch-changes | Caffeine & Kettlebells fundraiser for Move for Peace
I think it’s funny that people are so nervous about changes. In some ways this is how humans are programmed. But changes are a constant and they’re all around us! Sometimes they’re big changes, sometimes they’re small, almost imperceptible changes, building up day after day.
Recently I experienced a big change: I moved! I’ll admit, I didn’t want to move. Moving homes is a pain. Also, you’d be surprised how much shoes weigh. But–long story short, it’s what the circumstances required. The process of moving was stressful and tiring. (Thank goodness I train! Functional training FTW.) But our new home already feels like home and I’m thoroughly enjoying the upgrades, like a chef’s kitchen, yard space for my dog, and more space overall for us to lay out and relax.
Another change: after more than seven years of heading up the programming at CrossFit Burlingame (CFBG), I am “outsourcing” the work to another CrossFit affiliate. It’s bittersweet as I like to think that my programming has been core to CFBG’s identity and growth. At the same time, I recognize the opportunity to bring fresh perspective and energy, as well as freeing my time up to focus on my personal training athletes.
Change sucks. Because we want to be comfortable and change is uncomfortable. But I think about how this applies to training and fitness. There is no way of getting to your goals without experiencing that change and discomfort. When athletes first come to me, they tell me their current routines, and I ask, “How’s that working out for you?” Trying something new = change = discomfort.
Fitness changes your body and fitness can also be a tool to manage other changes in your life. I can’t imagine a change filled with more turmoil than being forced to flee from your home. That’s why I’m partnering with Preemptive Love and bringing back Caffeine & Kettlebells on Sunday, Sep 25! During the entire month of September, Preemptive Love invites people to Move for Peace–whether that’s running, biking, skating, dancing, or swinging a kettlebell. Our post-workout caffeine features Preemptive Love coffee/tea prepared by Boba Guys Product Manager (more importantly, my best friend) Alex Lam. Proceeds from this special Caffeine & Kettlebells will support Preemptive Love and fund a soccer club and self defense program for children in Lebanon.
I hope I’ll see you at Caffeine & Kettlebells, and let’s make some change together for refugee youth.
